Atiku, best to succeed Obasanjo

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Anambra State, Mr Rexford Ezenagu has averred that there has been divine intervention to the nation's political leadership problem since 1999 with the appointment of a civilian as post-military era Vice-President.

In a statement, Mr Ezenagu emphasised that the appointment in 1999 of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as civilian vice president was in itself a solution to the looming succession crisis which if not properly handled could result in intra-party squabbles within the ruling PDP.

According to him, "the PDP's zoning arrangement which has now become a model for the other parties, if properly harnessed will lead to our party maintaining its enviable position as it is a privilege to be called or chosen to be a leader, but an abomination before God to defraud or mislead those entrusted into one's care to lead and direct."

Rex Ezenagu stressed that since leadership was an avenue for one to contribute one's quota to national development through selfless service, "Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has been so faithful in the past six years in his stewardship to God and his boss, hence it will take only divine denial to stop him from becoming President in 2007."
Said he, "electoral success without an acceptable and tested personality could result in PDP's failure and for the purpose of continuity of any vision, adding that , concerted efforts must be made in maintaining existing socio-political structures for the emergence of a credible successor."

The present democratic dispensation in the country has made it imperative that whoever will succeed President Olusegun Obasanjo must be a visionary, experienced personality and an acceptable candidate, he said.

Such a leader, Ezenagu maintained "must have the interest of the masses of this nation at heart as has been manifested by incumbent Vice President Atiku Abubakar during his six-year vice-presidency", adding, "Nigeria no longer needs dictators, we are in a democracy and whoever is to succeed Obasanjo must be responsive to the yearnings and aspirations of the people and not dictate to them."
